Rocamadour, a must-see in the Dordogne Valley
The 3-star Les Cigales campsite is located just a few steps from the heart of Rocamadour, a not-to-be-missed opportunity to discover this world-renowned medieval town.
Rocamadour is a medieval town perched on a cliff, as if suspended from the cliffside above the Alzou canyon, offering breathtaking views over the surrounding valley.
The town is a major pilgrimage site, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Climb the 216 steps leading to the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Rocamadour, where you’ll discover the Black Madonna, to whom believers attribute numerous miracles.
Other religious buildings to discover include the Saint-Amadour crypt and the Basilique Saint-Sauveur.
In addition to its religious heritage, you can also stroll through the town’s pretty cobbled streets, discover Rocamadour castle and its ramparts, and admire the town’s unique architecture while enjoying the vibrant, lively atmosphere.
Around the heart of the town, you can discover other must-see tourist sites that will delight the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest, such as the Gouffre de Padirac, just twenty minutes from the campsite.
Dive into this 103m-deep chasm and embark on an underground tour that will leave you speechless: boat ride on an underground river, discovery of translucent lakes, giant stalactite, etc.
Just 3 minutes from the campsite, another well-known cave, the Grotte des Merveilles, awaits you for a journey back in time with its various concretions and cave paintings.
If you love caves and are curious to discover more about underground life, the Lot region has many others for you to explore: the Carbonnières caves, the Cougnac caves, the Lacave caves, the Pech Merle caves and the Presque caves.
During your stay at our Les Cigales campsite, you can visit the Rocher des Aigles, just 6 minutes from the campsite, an ornithological park where you can observe a variety of birds of prey, including eagles, vultures, falcons and parrots.
In particular, you’ll be able to watch birds flying through the sky in a magical aerial ballet!
Just across the road from the campsite, you’ll find the Forêt des Singes, a park where monkeys live in freedom: you can easily observe them up close and learn more about this species from experienced guides.
